The Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects is moving from their current home at the Merchandise Mart to a new office in the historic Jeweler's Building, also home to Helmut Jahn's office. They are seeking LEED for Commercial Interiors certification for this small interior build-out. The chapter held a design competition for young architects which was won by the folks listed above, who completed the project design with the assistance of HOK.
This project mostly goes after low-hanging fruit which is enough to earn a base LEED Certified rating. I will point out they have designed the lighting to have power usage 15% below ASHRAE 90.1-2004 requirements, which requires some thought to achieve because the requirements in this energy standard are significantly more stringent than in previous editions.
It's great to see the AIA taking a leadership role by taking their own medicine, especially since the AIA adopted the 2030 Challenge. And of course, as a member-driven non-profit one can expect a lot of visitors to move through the space, so it is a great educational opportunity, both for AIA members and others. As with any AIA project, there are a lot of cooks stirring the pot - other project team members include LEED consultants Jessica Mondo (now at SOM), Kevin Hall (OWP/P), and Helen Kessler; commissioning agent OWP/P (Heather Beaudoin and Rand Ekman), MEP engineer Kent Consulting Engineers, and general contractor Executive Construction Inc.
