Hannah's Bretzel, the outrageously popular organic lunch spot, has opened a second location in the Illinois Center (don't confuse this with the State of IL building, aka Thompson Center). This time, the 1,750 sf space is organic as well, seeking LEED for Commercial Interiors certification. As a frequent customer of the original location (down the street from my office), I'll admit an undue bias on this one.
The project achieves a LEED-CI rating without doing anything especially exotic, and with a strong emphasis on green materials (such as certified wood) and the indoor environment (primarily with non-offgassing materials). 70% of eligible appliances, which are a large energy consumer in a food service operation are Energy Star rated, and the store is purchasing renewable energy certificates to cover 100% of its annual energy use. Of course, the store is also known for its green operations, using many or mostly (but not all) organic ingredients, recycled-content or biodegradable packaging, and green cleaning products.
I'll also shamelessly take this opportunity to send kudos to architect UrbanLab for their now-not-quite-so-recent victory in the History Channel's City of the Future competition, for an eco-boulevard scheme. Let's expect more great things from Martin and Sarah. The MEP engineer on Hannah's Zwei was BES.
